The Abbey Stables
beneath
Reading Public Library

The Abbey stables once stood where now rises Reading Central Library, adjoining the Abbey Mill on one side and the enclave's South Gate on the other. This long range of buildings was probably well stocked for the Abbot's retinue included a marshal or master of the horse, a huntsman, a palfrey keeper and a carter, as well as various underlings. The building seems to have survived the Dissolution of the Monastery and was almost certainly used by the subsequent Royal Palace and Abbey House, home of Sir Francis Knollys and family.
