The Reredorter
Where Monks did their Business
  • Monk on a Medieval Toilet - © Nash Ford PublishingThis was the monks' toilet.
  • They sat over holes in wooden benches. Everything fell straight down into the river running underneath the building to be washed clean away.
  • The monks were spoilt. Running water in houses was very unusual in medieval times.
  • Ordinary people didn't have toilets. They used cess pits, or just went in the street!
