The Reredorter
off Abbey Street,
Reading
The Reredorter was the
monks' communal toilet. Its ruins are conveniently placed next to the
dormitory, where it once spanned a short branch of the nearby Holy Brook
that acted as the main Abbey drain. Along one wall on the floor above
would have been set a long box-bench with numerous apertures for the
brethren to sit on. These would be completely open to the brook flowing
directly below. Waste would thus be quickly and cleanly removed from the
Abbey precincts, unlike at the cesspits found in the town.
