for Berkshire
There were Roman Villas all across the
county. The Romans lived so long ago that nothing remains of them
above ground now. Archaeologists have found where lots of Roman
buildings once stood, but sometimes it is difficult to tell exactly
what they were. Here are some definite examples:
- Aldermaston Wharf at Beenham
- Alfred's Castle at Ashbury
- Barton Court Farm at Abingdon
- Canhurst Farm at Knowl Hill
- Castle Hill at Maidenhead
- Cox Green at Maidenhead
- Cornhill Farm at West Challow
- Feens Farm at Littlewick Green
- Hamfield at Frilford
- Lower Basildon at Basildon
- Maddle Farm at Lambourn
- Maidenhatch at Tidmarsh
- Sewage Works at Kintbury
- Wellhouse at Hermitage
- Woolstone at Uffington
The nearest Roman Villa to Berkshire
that has been excavated and you can visit is at Littlecote House in
Wiltshire. It is only just over the border from Hungerford.
