Sonning Church
Monument to Carew Williams

North Wall: Marble Mural Heraldic Monument

This monument set up to Carew Williams, who died in September 1652, and his sister (presumably the adjoining Lady Clarke) by their brother Sir John Williams, bart. They were the children of John Williams Esq. of Marnhull in Dorset, and their coat of arms shows that the family was descended from Owain Gwynedd, the 12th century warrior Prince of Gwynedd in North Wales. The memorial was sculpted by John Stone (d.1699) and is mentioned by Horace Walpole who quotes Stone's account: “formerly I made a little tomb of white marble, being an eagle with an escutcheon upon his breast, set up at Sonning in Berkshire for £7.”
